Sedation dentistry comes in many forms, but the same goal remains: to create a more comfortable, anxiety-free experience. Although it is commonly used on adults, many parents wonder if it is safe for children because they tend to express fear when visiting the dentist’s office. Keep reading to discover which methods offer the best results when administered to little ones.
What Are the Different Types of Sedation?
Generally, there are three types of dental sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Some dentists also provide general anesthesia.
Dentists and researchers agree that sedation dentistry is safe for children when administered by a qualified dental professional. This means additional training and experience are required to provide this type of treatment.
Nitrous Oxide 101
Most dentists who provide sedation dentistry offer nitrous oxide. As the mildest form available, it is commonly known as “laughing gas.” The combination of nitrous oxide and pure oxygen is administered through a nasal mask that your child will wear during their appointment. As they inhale, the gas will help them remain calm and relaxed while in the treatment chair.
They will not be unconscious during their visit, but they will not experience any anxiety while receiving essential dental care.
Once the mask is removed and the gas is turned off, the effects will quickly dissipate. After breathing pure oxygen for a few minutes, your child should be free to resume normal activities and return to school or home.
General Anesthesia: Need to Know
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) established updated guidelines in 2019 concerning the use of general anesthesia. Since it is considered the most potent form of sedation, they require at least two people to be in the room. One is a dentist or oral surgeon; the other may be a certified nurse anesthetist, a physician or dental anesthesiologist, or another oral surgeon.
If general anesthesia is recommended, your child will remain asleep throughout their procedure. They will experience no pain and will be closely monitored by licensed professionals to ensure their comfort and safety.
This method of treatment is usually designed for children who are especially anxious about the dentist’s office, who are preparing to undergo multiple complex dental procedures, or who have physical or intellectual disabilities.
No matter which type of dental sedation your child receives, you can be sure that their pediatric dentist will discuss all the necessary details during a scheduled consultation. This will provide greater peace of mind on the big day.
