As a parent, you may want the absolute best for your child by setting them up for a lifetime of confidence where their dreams become a reality, and you see them flourish. Getting them started with braces can help with this, as it makes their smile the best it can be, but when are they ready to begin treatment? Keep reading to learn four signs that it’s time for your child’s orthodontic journey!

1.)  Lost Their Baby Teeth Earlier or Later Than Expected

On average, kids begin losing their baby teeth when they are around five or six years old. Every grin is unique, so it’s normal if it occurs a little sooner or later. However, if it happens much earlier or later than expected, you might want to talk to their pediatric dentist. If baby teeth stay in well after or before they are meant to, then there is a chance the permanent teeth will become damaged or have their development affected.

2.)  Their Teeth Are Noticeably Misaligned

As your child’s adult teeth are coming in, if you see that they are crooked or crowded, then it might be time to start braces. It’s one of the most obvious signs, and any malocclusion (like an overbite or underbite) can cause some issues down the line. To help ensure your loved one has the confidence to show off their smile and so aren’t vulnerable to numerous dental issues, it could be time to begin their orthodontic treatment.

3.)  Issues When Biting and Chewing

When it’s time to eat, do you notice that your child has a bit of trouble when they bite or chew their food? Misalignment could be to blame, as their teeth may meet at awkward angles. Without being able to break down their favorite meals, they may have indigestion or not get all the nutrients they need. If they complain about biting their cheek or tongue often, then it may be time to consider braces to give them the healthy bite they deserve.

4.)  Have Trouble Speaking

Teeth are used more than for eating! They are important when it comes to speech development. If you notice that your child has trouble saying certain sounds or with their clarity, then it may be a sign that it’s time to start orthodontics. Talking to their pediatric dentist can help decide if straightening their smile will be the best choice for them.

Although you may feel a bit lost deciding when to start your child on braces, remember these four signs. After you partner with their provider, you can feel confident in the choice for their oral health, whereby in the end, they will have a beautiful smile that’s the best it can be.
