Unfortunately, many kids develop preventable oral health issues early in life, and the best way to help your child avoid these problems is to get them started with excellent dental hygiene as soon as possible. Here’s a brief guide to when you should start brushing your child’s teeth and how to do it safely.

When Should I Start Brushing My Baby’s Teeth?

It’s important to begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they begin to emerge from the gum tissue and begin flossing as soon as they have two teeth touching. Dentists also recommend scheduling your child for their first appointment around their first birthday or as soon as their first tooth comes in, whichever comes first. This will help prevent accumulations of infectious plaque early in life as well as a host of oral health problems like gum disease, tooth decay, and misalignments.

However, it’s also a great idea to begin cleaning their gums and soft tissues with a clean finger or washcloth during the months before the teeth begin to emerge. This will stimulate the gums and help acclimate your child to the sensations of proper oral hygiene habits.

How Should I Brush My Baby’s Teeth?

Proper brushing technique is a crucial part of keeping your child’s teeth healthy, so it’s best to understand how to brush teeth the right way before you begin cleaning your kid’s smile. Apply a rice-sized bit of toothpaste to a soft-bristled brush and gently treat each surface of each tooth with short, circular strokes. This will safely scrub away harmful agents like plaque and food debris without harming your child’s enamel.

How Can I Teach My Child to Brush Their Teeth Independently?

It’s important for children to learn how to properly care for their teeth on their own, and young kids usually learn these habits by following the examples of their parents. Making oral hygiene sessions a family affair can be a great way to allow your child to observe how you carefully and thoroughly brush and floss your teeth and allow you to give them guidance as they learn to clean their smile. You can also give them a small hourglass to help them consistently brush for two minutes at a time.

Teaching your kid excellent dental hygiene habits can help them preserve their oral and overall health for life. Consulting with your pediatric dentist can help you find the best way to set your child up for many decades with a clean and beautiful smile.

About the Author

Dr. Ryne S.
